Blowing our own trumpet since 1931

Dear Head Teacher and Music Coordinator,

I am delighted to be able to tell you that the Harrogate Symphony Orchestra has been invited to perform in the Harrogate International Festival on July 19th in the Royal Hall. Following the great success of our children’s ‘No Strings’ charity concert 2 years ago, we have decided to use the opportunity to hold another concert for children.

This concert will be the climax to the BBC project called ’10 Pieces’ that aims to encourage youngsters to listen to classical music and attend concerts. Schools throughout the UK have been taking part in a wide variety of creative opportunities and workshops that involve exploring 10 popular classical works. The culmination of this project will be realised by a live performance of a selection from these 10 pieces.

The attraction for this year’s Festival Concert is that it will be very much an interactive one with children invited to play alongside the HSO in two of the pieces. If any child would like to take part on the day they will be able to submit an application form, which is attached to this email.

Once I have collected all the applications, I will confirm the child’s place on the day and advise how they should download the pieces. The music has been specially arranged by the BBC for a variety of standards, all of which can be played with the HSO and which will enable them to practice before the event.

All the organisational details of the day will also be forwarded to the children.

But it is not only the players that will be entertained. We will also be trying for a new record: the largest kazoo orchestra in Harrogate! All members of the audience will receive a kazoo to play during the concert, ensuring everyone takes part.

At the last event of this kind, schools were able to book so children and parents were sitting together and arrangements will be the same. The only difference this time is that the bookings should go through the International Festival Office at 32 Cheltenham Parade, Harrogate or telephone 562303. Tickets are £8 adults and £4 pupils (whether in the audience or participating). Of course those that are performing on stage with the HSO will remain on stage throughout.

The concert should last about an hour and a half.

We also want to highlight this occasion by offering the opportunity for schools to showcase some of the other work that has been the result of the BBC project and this may well include art and design ideas as well as music.

If you would like to be part of this, please contact the Festival Office or myself and arrangements will be made to display the work on the day. I would also be delighted to come into schools to help you promote the event.

The concert will be a wonderful experience for children: to hear a large symphony orchestra and play alongside the adults, (a rare opportunity indeed!) as well as attempting to achieve that new Harrogate Kazoo record should all be fun, fun, fun (and of course ‘educational’).

Could you please pass on all these details to your staff and pupils and encourage them to take part in the most amazing concert of the year.

Application forms could be emailed to me directly or sent en block to:
